The Community Outreach Bureau was established May 1, 2005 under the direction of Police Commissioner Richard Dormer. The purpose of this bureau is to act as a liaison between the Police Department and the public we serve. The Community Outreach Bureau consists of the Police Athletic League (PAL), Crime Stoppers, Recruitment, and the Public Information section.

Suffolk County Police to Offer Teens “Crash Course in Crash Avoidance”
Charge: Free
Dates: July 12-16 (Choose one day, Monday-Friday, and one session)
Times: Two sessions daily
AM Session: 8:45am to 11:15 am
PM Session: 12:45pm to 3:15pm Locations: 110 Old Country Rd.

Requirements: Teens 16 – 19 years of age
No license required to attend course**
Teens with a permit or license will drive a police car.
** Teens that do not possess a learners permit or drivers license are allowed to attend classroom and demonstration portion of course, but will NOT be permitted to operate the vehicle.
Course: Suffolk County Police Emergency Vehicle Operations (EVOC) instructors are offering teens a course unlike any summer school class they have ever taken. The 2 ½ hr course will consist of a classroom lecture followed by a live demonstration on the EVOC track on vehicle dynamics, braking, corning and acceleration. Students that are holder of learner permit or a driver license will be allowed to operate the police vehicle on the track through a modified course, at a slower speed, where learning proper driving techniques in crash avoidance is the main focus.

| CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY |
|
| The Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is an award winning educational program which invites Suffolk County residents to their police academy for specialized training for the purpose of bringing the Police Department and the community closer together. It opens up lines of communication and builds trust between the police and the community. The CPA dispels misconception as to how the Police Department operates and lets the public have a better understanding of what their police can and cannot do.
The CPA is total of 48 hours long. There are 16 sessions, one session per week. Each class is three hours long, 6:30pm-9:30pm. Classes are offered twice per year, usually in September and March. This course is free of charge.

IDENT-A-KID PROGRAM |
|
The Ident-a-kid program is a free child identification program sponsored by District Attorney Tom Spota and administered by PAL. The Ident-a-kid packet contains vital information about your child, including, medical history, DNA, photograph, fingerprints, and safety tips. All information is contained in a clear plastic packet with a magnetic strip that adheres to your refrigerator door.
Ident-a kid is available most Thursday evenings from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. in the lobby of Police Headquarters, located at 30 Yaphank Ave, Yaphank.

POLICE EXPLORERS PROGRAM |

The Suffolk County Police Explorer program is learning for life, career and leadership development program dedicated to boys and girls between the ages of 14-20. The purpose of the Explorer program is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature, make proper decisions, and become responsible adults. A special emphasis is directed towards law enforcement careers.
Under the leadership and support of Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, the explorer program has expanded from 105 members in 2004, to over 200 today.
The Explorer program is available in all seven precincts.

| YOUTH ACADEMY |

| The Youth Police Academy is designed to give high school students an opportunity to experience the many roles of police officers in their communities. Students will be selected by their school district after meeting the basic selection criteria forwarded to each district.
The purpose of the Youth Academy is to introduce the student to the intricacies of police work, establish a positive relationship between the Police Department and young adults in the community and enhance responsible citizenship.
The 5 day program is held at the Suffolk County Police Academy located on the Brentwood Campus of Suffolk Community College, 502 Wicks Road, Brentwood, New York. The sessions will consist of classroom lectures, physical training, defensive tactics training and field trips to Department facilities such as our Aviation Section, Firearms Training Section and Special Patrol Bureau. Students will participate in a host of practical exercises, and should come prepared for a week long active hands on experience.
